10 Reasons to visit Eastern America’s Highest Town

#10 – The Emerald Outback adventure trail system provides 8+ miles of gorgeous trails for hiking, mountain biking and trail running. Located near the top of the mountain, the trail system is maintained by the Beech Mountain Parks & Rec Department and is open to the public year-round at no charge.

#9 – Labor Day weekend, the Mile High Kite Festival fills the skies above Beech Mountain with color. Kids of all ages enjoy a relaxing final weekend of summer that also includes a street dance and other festivities.

#8 – Winter sports lovers on the East Coast: nobody takes you higher than Beech Mountain Resort. It is the highest ski area in the Eastern U.S. and offers top-notch skiing, snowboarding, snowtubing and ice skating. The alpine village at the base of the slopes is home to shops, a craft brewery and a lodge-style bar and grill.

Named after the mountain’s signature elevation of 5,506 feet above sea level, this glass roundhouse is located just a few steps off the chairlift at the top of the mountain. Soak in the panoramic vistas as you sip a beverage or grab a bite to eat. A wonderful place to enjoy a summer sunset, or take a break from skiing.

#4 – Fall for Beech Mountain each autumn. The town’s perch high in the Blue Ridge Mountains makes it a gorgeous base camp for viewing fall foliage. Hike scenic trails, bike through forests or drive on the nearby Blue Ridge Parkway.

#3 – A mountain biking mecca. Did you know that USA Cycling has twice hosted the Downhill Mountain Biking Gravity National Championships on the downhill trails at Beech Mountain Resort? Not only that, but it has also twice hosted the Collegiate Mountain Biking National Championship at the resort and in the Emerald Outback. Suffice to say, there is a lot of great mountain biking on Beech!
